In the extreme north of mainland Scotland with its unspoilt scenery, deserted beaches and rare wildlife is the North Highlands. John O’Groats, the mecca for charitable cycle rides is at the most northerly point of the mainland, just 20 miles from Wick, which is the county town of Caithness.
Caithness has very open expansive countryside, wide skies and dramatic seascapes to suit anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful break.
Wick was originally a Viking settlement and was once claimed to be the busiest herring port in Europe. The harbour and much of the old town was designed by Thomas Telford and is a constant source of interest to visitors. Nearby Thurso on the Pentland Firth is popular with surfing enthusiasts.
