Destination Guide - Oslo

Oslo Norway’s largest city has been the country’s capital since 1814 and is the location for the government, parliament, as well as home to the King of Norway at the Royal Palace.

The city is close to the Oslomarka green hills and positioned at the northern tip of Oslofjord, which is just a 10 minute boat ride to sandy beaches on the Oslo fjord islands.  The city has preserved wooden houses that are centuries old and are still lived in the Gamlebyen quarter, while a well preserved 700 year old fortress - Akershus Fortress is worth visiting.

The main street in Oslo is Karl Johan Street, which is linked by the castle at one end and the rail station at the other.  The national theatre, university and Norwegian Parliament are all located on the street.

Oslo has a wide selection of international cuisine to choose from with many restaurants and cafes, which includes five Michelin rated restaurants.  There’s a variety of art museums, and with its Viking heritage a visit to the Viking Ship Museum is a must.  In the winter Oslo has hundreds of kilometres of cross country ski trails and eight ski centres.

The port of Oslo is the largest cargo port in the country with some of the world’s major shipping companies based in the city.  With Norway being one of the world’s largest producers of oil in the world, leading energy companies have offices in Oslo and there are also many insurance companies in the city.
