Destination Guide - Manchester

ManchesterManchester is the capital of the North West and is the UK’s most popular tourist destination after London and Edinburgh. It is an excellent base for tourism and undoubtedly lies with the fact that it is served by good transport links, has plenty to see and do in the city and it is surrounded by areas of national beauty.

For those wishing to engage in retail therapy, Manchester is a shopper’s delight. High street stores are located in the Arndale Centre through to designer and exclusive fashion which can be found in the area of St Ann’s Square and The Corn Exchange.

Dining out is varied and plentiful; cuisine in the city is as multicultural as the population – Chinese, Indian, French, Italian, Thai and Japanese.

Visitor Attractions:

Old Trafford – Home to Manchester United Football Club.

Printworks – First urban and leisure entertainment complex, which includes 36 cafes and bars, 16 restaurants, a health complex and the city’s only IMAX cinema.

Royal Exchange Theatre – One of the best theatres outside London.

People’s History Museum – Chronicles the lives of Manchester’s working people during the last 100 years.

Museum of Science and Industry – Partly based in the buildings of the oldest passenger railway station in the world.

Trafford Centre – One of the UK’s largest shopping centres with 280 stores.

The Lowry – Theatres and galleries which display some of the work of the artist L S Lowry.

Salford Museum & Art Gallery
– Experience the sights and sounds of Victorian Salford with original shop fronts and fascinating interiors.

MEN, GMEX – Plays host to a whole programme of shows, sporting events and concerts.

Beyond the city there is an abundance of places to visit, whether it is peace and tranquillity that you are looking for or thrills and excitement, there is something for everyone.

The Lake District in Cumbria is England’s only mountainous region covering an area of 700 square miles with over 100 peaks and 15 lakes. From its highest point and on a clear day, it is possible to see beyond the hills of Scotland and the Irish Sea.  Tatton Park is the UK’s most visited National Trust property set in 1000 acres of beautiful parkland with lakes.

For the more excitable, there is Camelot Theme Park displaying a host of thrilling rides and spectacular live shows.

Blackpool – Is Britain’s top free tourist attraction with over 145 rides and attractions.   

Chester Zoo – Supports and promotes conservation by breeding threatened animals. Or if you fancy a flutter why not pay a visit to Haydock Park and Aintree Racecourse - Home of the Martell Grand National.
