Eastern Signs New Ground Handling Contract for Aberdeen Hub
June 2004
Eastern Airways has awarded a three-year, multi-million pound contract to Menzies Aviation Group
to provide passenger and baggage handling services at its hub airport of Aberdeen. The contract will see Menzies Ground Services employ 32 staff to support the nine routes Eastern Airways operates from Aberdeen.

As part of its ongoing commitment to Aberdeen, the airline has also invested in a new dedicated customer service desk at the airport that will be staffed by Menzies and supply flight information and handle ticket sales. The regional airline, headquartered in Humberside, will operate 14,000 flights to and from Aberdeen this year on its routes to Belfast, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham East Midlands, Southampton, Teesside and Wick. The airline provides more destinations from Aberdeen than any other carrier. Eastern Airways operate over 650 UK scheduled flights each week, and will carry approximately half a million passengers this year on a route network that also includes Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Inverness, Isle of Man, London Stansted and Manchester.

Eastern’s director Graeme Ross said: “Menzies is a world leader in providing airport handling services and we are delighted that this contract will serve our extensive route network from Aberdeen. “We have established ourselves as the largest route operator at the North of Scotland’s principal airport, offering improved business and leisure connectivity for this important region. This contract with Menzies and our new information, ticketing and check-in facilities are the latest developments in our growth at Aberdeen,” said Mr Ross. Clive Macmillan, director ground handling solutions at Menzies said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to handle Eastern Airways in Aberdeen. Through the Menzies Express brand we are able to offer a bespoke product as we have proved through the successful start to operations in Edinburgh and Nottingham East Midlands for Eastern earlier in the year.”

Geoff Runcie, chief executive of Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce said: “Eastern Airways’ commitment to the North-east is considerable and its network of UK routes from Aberdeen are vital to our economy. In a competitive business environment it is crucial that our companies can access the UK’s major business regions by air. I am pleased to say that Eastern continues to provide air links that enable the North-east’s economy to develop.”
