Newcastle is a compact city measuring 112 sq km with a population of approximately 300 thousand people. It is a metropolitan authority and holds the title of the regional capital of North East England.
Situated on the north bank of the River Tyne, Newcastle is dominated by its most famous symbol, the Tyne Bridge, one of seven linking the city with Gateshead. The city has an outstanding industrial heritage, once famous as the UK's coal capital and one of the most important shipbuilding regions in the country. Apart from London and Bath, it has more listed classical buildings than anywhere else in England.
