Destination Guide - Southampton

SouthamptonSouthampton boasts an excellent south coast location, easily accessible by all modes of transport and is still one of Britain’s leading ports. The important commercial and industrial city of Southampton was for a long time the main transatlantic seaport for the south of England and it was from here that the Titanic sailed on her first and last fateful voyage.

The city’s museums reveal the fascinating and diverse history of Southampton from medieval prosperity to the golden age of transatlantic travel. The sea is the traditional lifeblood of the city and still plays a vital part in its prosperity. Also known as the Green City, it has seven parks and it is also famous for its well preserved medieval town walls, tower and gates. Approximately, half of the original one mile circuit still survives and one of the best ways to sample all the memorials and landmarks is to participate in a guided walking tour of the city.

Southampton caters for all ages and offers fine dining, shopping and hosts a calendar of spectacular events including world famous yacht races, Europe’s biggest on-water boat show, and balloon and music festivals
